The Vinedresser

"I am the true vine and My Father is the Vinedresser." John 15:1

The vinedresser is the caretaker of the vine. He watches over it, to receive and enjoy it's fruit. As the Vine the Lord Jesus was dependent on the Vinedresser, His Father. His complete confidence was in the One whose will He came to do (Jn. 4:34)! The Lord Jesus reminds us of this when He said, "The Son can do nothing of Himself (Jn. 5:19). The Lord Jesus told Philip, " Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works" (Jn. 14:10).

Being attached to the Vine, to Christ, we have an intimate relationship of dependence on the Father and as a result we can have complete confidence in our Father to provide and protect us as we abide in the Vine and seek to bear fruit for the pleasure of the vinedresser!

Isaiah 27:2-6 looks forward to a day when God will redeem and restore His earthly vineyard Israel. But this "song of the vineyard" as it has been called reveals much about the character of the vinedresser. We learn that He is a faithful vinedresser watching over his vineyard day and night! He protects His vineyard from any intruders. He waters it, providing refreshment and all it needs to blossom and blue.

What the Vinedresser will do for Israel in a coming day, He does now for each of us as we abide in the Vine! So before we begin to contemplate the branches and bearing fruit, let's remember that we must have our hearts in full confidence and be in complete dependence on the Vinedresser, our Father, after all the fruit is for Him and is for His glory!
