The True Vine

"I am the true vine and My Father is the vinedresser." John 15:1

This is the last of the seven I Am's in the gospel of John. The Lord Jesus has already declared "I am the bread of life" (Jn. 6), "I am the light of the world" (Jn. 8), I am the door and the good shepherd (Jn. 10). These four I Am's were said publicly, then in John 11 we read of the Lord saying, " I am the resurection and the life." He said this personally to Martha. Then in John 14 and 15 the Lord Jesus spoke directly to His disciples and said, "I am the way the truth and the life..." and "I am the true vine..." If we look just at the first two words of this sentence "I Am" this reminds us that the Lord Jesus was before Abraham (Jn. 8:58). He is that "I Am" of Exodus 3. He is the great "I Am" God manifested in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16), the Eternal Word that became flesh and dwelt among us (Jn. 1:1, 14).

As the true vine the Lord Jesus stand in contrast to the nation of Israel (Is. 5:1-7, Ps. 80:8, Jer. 2:21), who failed to produce the fruit the Vinedresser was looking for! He was the true vine always dependent on the Vinedresser, His Father(Jn. 5:19, 14:19).

What a privilege to be attached to this vine! Have you enjoyed sitting under the shadow of the true vine and rest under Him from the heat of the day? Can you say as the women of old, "I sat under His shadow with great delight, and His fruit was sweet to my taste" (Song of Songs 2:3)? All the resource that flow in the true vine are available for all those who aibe in Him!
