What does the Bible say about the Transgender Issue?

When Brue Jenner had his sex change and became Caitlyn Jenner, it changed the landscape of our culture quite a bit! His sex changed has brought to the forefront the whole issue of transgender lifestyle in our culture. While many Christians would rather not deal with this subject we are being force to by many new laws that are being purposed such as transgender bathrooms in colleges, and universities. Shopping centers and stores like Target have already made the change in some parts of the country. So what is the Christian to do? Does the Bible even speak about a transgender life style? We believe it does and would like to address this issue that is so prevalent in our culture today!

In Genesis 1:26, the Bible says, “And God created man in His image, in His likeness; male and female He created them . . . . and it was very good.” In Isaiah 43:7 God informs us that “everyone…whom I have created for my glory, I have form him, yes I have made him.” Maleness and femaleness are God’s choice, determined at conception! Psalm 139 teaches us that God fashions each one of us, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. . . . My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. . . . your eyes saw my unformed body” (verses 13-16). God’s creation of each individual must surely include His designation of gender/sex. His wonderful work leaves no room for mistakes; no one is born with the “wrong body.” But growing into one’s masculinity or femininity and embracing it can be thwarted by very early events that prevent children from having a clear sense of their gender, because gender identity is a developmental issue, and it starts at birth. Years of affirmation and validation during the growing years contribute to self-understanding. This is why so many people think they were born gay, lesbian, or transgendered!

The Bible clearly teaches us that God intends for every male is to grow into masculinity, and for every female to grow into femininity. As we have already seen God has designed creation with two distinct and complementary sexes, male and female (Genesis 1:27) and the Lord Jesus reaffirms this in Matthew 19:4 and Mark 10:6. Our culture has come up with new labels to describe something new and different such as transgendered or transsexual. But these new labels do not affect what God has declared in His Word! He sees the people behind the labels as His precious, broken children. The biology of a man and women alone tells us that homosexuality is not normal. The Bible tells us (Gen 1:26) that God’s intent is heterosexuality, with definite boundaries between men and women in both appearance and behavior.

Distinctions in masculine and feminine roles as ordained by God are part of the created order and should find expression in every human heart (Genesis 2:18, 21–24). The fall of mankind into sin and God’s subsequent curse have introduced brokenness and futility into God’s good creation (Genesis 3:1–24, Romans 8:20). After the fall of man, it did not take long for gender issues to become confused. In Abraham’s day, homosexuality was widespread in some cities (Genesis 19:1-7; Jude 7). The Bible is unmistakably clear that homosexuality is a sinful perversion of God’s gift of sexuality (Romans 1:18-32; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

In the Law, transvestism / transvestitism was specifically forbidden: “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this” (Deuteronomy 22:5, 23:1).

Another possible reference to transsexualism is 1 Corinthians 6:9, where “male prostitutes” is listed as a separate category from “homosexual offenders.” The King James Version uses the word “effeminate” here; that is to say, the “male prostitutes” might be transsexual men who act as women.

The culture we live in is proof that mankind has turn its back on God. The apostle Paul outlines this in Romans 1:18-32, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.”

God does not hate those that find themselves living a lifestyle that goes against His designed will and His purpose for mankind as given in His Holy Word, we all had “like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). Every one of us “have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) and "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23a). But “God demonstrated His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” and now “the gift of God is eternal life” (Romans 6:23b). So we who know the love of God ought to extend love and compassion to those whose sexual self-understanding is shaped by a distressing conflict between their biological sex and their gender identity. While we should not and must not condone any life style or practices that go against the righteousness of God, but we should reach out to them showing the love of Christ and invite all transgender persons to trust in Christ and become a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
