And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14

When Moses was commanded by God to go to Pharaoh to deliver the Israelites out of Egypt, He asked and all important question, “Who should I say sends me?” The answer was “I AM Who I Am” sends you”. Then God went onto explain, “This is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” The Lord wants all mankind to remember and know His great name and what it reveals about Him.

“The Name I Am Who I Am” in Hebrew is the word YAHWEH, which we know as Jehovah. It means the Self-existing One and emphasize to us that God had no beginning and will never have and end! The name Jehovah describes His fullness, His eternal existence, sovereignty, unlimited power, and omnipresence.

There are three basic names for God in the Old Testament. While we know that we are unable to fully understand everything about our Lord, we can learn more about Him through His names.

Elohim is the name used of Him in Genesis 1:1 and we know it as God. It describes Him as existing before the beginning of time and being the Creator of all things!

Adonai is the Hebrew name for Lord and means Master.

Jehovah (YAHWEH) is the name that first appears when God created man. It signifies that God is the God of relationship! It is the most sacred and precious name of God and is used to associate Him with His people! Usually we read it as LORD throughout the Old Testament.

We read in the list of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 this name LORD (Jehovah/YAHWEH) at least eight times and the third commandment demands, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” In the Jewish culture, God’s name was treated with great reverence, but today, our society dishonors that precious name often. We must be careful not to profane His name or use it in vain, this includes the name of Jesus, because as we will see Jesus is Jehovah, He is the Great I AM.
