Before Abraham was, I AM (Part 2)

Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” John 8:58

When the Lord Jesus spoke these words to the religious leaders of the day they recognized this as a claim to equality with God and considered this to be blaspheme! But what they failed to see was that “when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons” (Gal. 4:4-5).

As we read through the gospel of John we learn that Jesus often affirmed equality with God. How could He claim this? He was God manifested in the flesh!

In John 1:1-3 we read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” We see the Lord Jesus in these verses as the eternal Word (v1-2), as the creative Word (v3) and as the incarnate Word latter in verse 14 when we read that “the Word became flesh…”

In John 10:30 He declared, “I and My Father are One.” This was a clear statement about His deity! The word “One” does not suggest that the Father and Son are identical Persons, it really means that they are One in essence. The Father is God and the Son is God, but the Father is no the Son and the Son is not the Father. He is speaking about unity not identity! The Jewish leaders understood clearly what He was saying!

Latter to Philip He would say, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me…” (Jn. 14:9-11).

As we turn back to our verse above in John 5:58 we see Jesus informed these religious leaders that before Abraham was, I AM.” This statement can be translated “Before Abraham came into being I AM.” This was affirming His Sonship, His eternal Presence and the eternal title of Jehovah, “I AM who I AM.”
