Christian Liberty (Part 2)

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Corinthians 3:17

We saw last time that true Christian liberty allows us to serve our Lord, not out of fear or out of a sense of duty, but out of gratitude and love. It also causes us to be others centered instead of self-centered!

In today’s verse we see where this liberty is found! It is found as we focus on the Person of Christ! In the context of 2 Corinthians 3, Paul has been emphasizing that Christ is the key to the Old Testament. Here he reemphasizes it. Many see this verse as a bold declaration of the deity of the Holy Spirit and it may be, but in the context of the passage what is to be emphasized is that all types and shadows of the Old Testament find their fulfillment in Christ! So our verse is really encouraging us that wherever Jesus Christ is recognized as Lord there is liberty!

Romans 8:15 reminds us that the Holy Spirit introduces us into a life of liberty, “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Holy Spirit’s occupation in each of our lives is to point us to the person of Christ (John 15:13-15). As we behold Him we are being transformed into His image (2 Cor. 3:18) in order for His light in us might shine through to the lost world that we live in (2 Cor. 4:1-7).

Paul was a beautiful example of this as seen in 2 Corinthians 4:8-11. He lived in the reality of true Christian liberty! He carried about in his body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life of Jesus also may be manifest in his body! He was willing for his earthen vessel to be broken that the light of the knowledge of the glory of God as it is seen in the face of Jesus Christ would be seen! That is Christ like liberty!
