Five Words of Great Importance from Genesis 22

Reading Genesis 22, the story Abraham offering up his son Isaac to God, I was impressed that there are 5 important expressions in this chapter that occur for the first time in Scripture. They are really 5 Keys to understanding the importance of the events in this chapter, they are:

1. Thine only Son. This is found three times (Gen. 22:2, 12, 16). In the N.T. John uses the Greek equivalent 5 times of the Lord Jesus, the only begotten (Jn. 1:14, 18, 3:16, 18, 1 Jn. 4:9).

2. Love (Gen. 22:2) This first occurrence refers to the love of a father for his son (Jn. 5:20, 10:17, 17:26). The second occurrence of the word (Gen. 24:67), unfolds the love of a bridegroom for his bride.

3. Worship (Gen. 22:5). Translated "bowed" down (Gen. 18:2, 19:1), it involves giving the best to God (Mt. 2:2, 11).

4. Lamb (Gen. 22:7-8). Where is the Lamb? The New Testament answer is found in John 1:29.

5. Obeyed (Gen. 22:18). This was the immediate response to the command of the Lord.
