Give Thanks

It is good to give thanks to the LORD, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High.
Psalm 92:1

On this day of Thanksgiving in America, Scripture gives us yet another new perspective: " It is good to give thanks to the Lord" (Psalm 92:1; italics added). Why is it good to give thanks? The author of Psalm 92 cites God's deeds and works as reasons to praise Him--all perfectly legitimate. As we look around the table today, we can find plenty of tangible reasons to give thanks to God.

But another reason it's good to thank the Lord is because of what thanksgiving does in us: Thanksgiving makes us grateful, and gratitude is a good thing. While the official Thanksgiving Day is a worthy celebration, every day is a day to give thanks to God. And when we give thanks to Him daily, we are reminded daily that gratitude is a pleasing attribute. It is good to live as grateful people. And the physical, verbal act of saying "Thank You, Lord" keeps us on a grateful path. We become people who give thanks "in everything" (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
